The Secret Ingredients to Inspire Kids to Make Healthy Choices.

It's hard to get kids of any age to eat well. Every parent has barked "eat your vegetables" at least 1438 times before their child turns 4. Now multiply that by the freedom they have when they hit teenage years, yikes! Don't worry, it's not too late.

Combat Ministries has partnered with Purdue University's Nutrition Education Program to bring you Teen Cuisine, a nutrition and wellness class for youths and teens!

Beth Scholer from the Purdue University Extension is a Nutrition Education Program Advisor Serving Madison County. Beth has an enormous passion for a wholistic approach to both our health, and the food systems we rely on.

Beth teaches kids, teens, and adults about the importance of physical activity, food safety, managing food resources and much more. She even covers grocery shopping on a budget and meal planning to reduce food waste. Her lessons include food demonstrations, tastings, and far more valuable information than you could have imagined.

Beth's partnership with Combat ministries focuses on youth and teenage students. Teen Cuisine is a hands-on curriculum for ages 13-18. They learn how to analyze food labels, and take a look at their favorite snacks, fast foods, and beverages to understand how to make the healthiest choice.

The best way to encourage teens to make better choices is to show, don't tell. Empowering them with the skills to prepare their own snacks and meals is critical. Teaching them to follow a recipe and giving them the basic skills to take matters into their own hands is often the gateway to a healthier lifestyle. Beth's Teen Cuisine class has done just that!

Youth ages 8-12 learn "CATCH" - Coordinated Approaches to Childhood Health. This curriculum focuses

on "Go-Slow-Whoa" foods. Children are taught to limit saturated fats, added sugars, and excessive salt.

This class is beginning next month and already full!

Aside from the culinary aspects, this program really drives home the critical importance of how lifestyle and food go hand in hand. One example is being aware of how much screen time versus outside or active time we engage in daily. Our culture has us so immersed in the digital world that we have screens available at every turn. That, combined with the business of most adults, can lead to a dependence on screens for entertainment, education, distraction and so much more. Kids are built for sunlight, fresh air, and exercise. Beth Scholer promotes physical activity and mental engagement in multiple forms for all ages as much as possible. Fortunately, Combat Ministries has multiple programs ready to help!

The goal of Teen Cuisine, CATCH and all future Nutritional Wellness Classes are to help people, young and old, make the best possible choices, despite circumstances beyond their control. Everyone deserves a long, healthy life. Many people have forgotten how much power their own choices have in that outcome. These classes are here to remind you of your power.
