A Story of Impact

Coach Bull and Lioness

Combat Ministries: 15 Years of Growth, Discipline, and Community Impact

Combat Ministries has been a beacon of personal growth and community support in Anderson Indiana for 15 years. We have touched the lives of countless individuals and families along the way. We have made many life-long friends. We have shed sweat and tears for eachother. We have had a ton of fun, but it hasn’t been easy. From our humble beginnings to the thriving program it is today, our journey has been one of transformation—both for our students and the larger community we serve.

What you are about to read is the story of two long-time participants whose experiences reflect the powerful, life-changing impact of Combat Ministries and Freedom Martial Arts. These interviews with Coach “Bull” and his daughter “Lioness” show their deep passion and gratitude from their 15 year journey with us.

A Legacy of Family, Growth, and Discipline

Combat Ministries has not just been a place for martial arts training; it’s been a cornerstone of family and personal development. Kennady Scott, known on the mat as “Lioness”,  started training with us at age 7. She has grown alongside the organization. She is the daughter of Mike Scott (Coach Bull), who has been with the ministry since its first year. Together, they represent the heart and soul of Combat Ministries—where discipline, respect, and family values are passed down through generations.

Coach Bull is so proud of his daughter’s journey. "It’s amazing to see how she’s grown in her discipline and ethics," he says. As a coach now, he sees the profound impact that the ministry’s values—such as respect, hard work, and perseverance—have instilled in her. "She’s not only my daughter, she’s a reflection of what this place teaches, and watching her evolve into the woman she is today is the most rewarding part of my own journey here," he adds.

Combat Ministries has been a space where Kennady has learned that hard work and respect are not just abstract values, but essential skills. They shape both personal and professional success. "The discipline I’ve learned here has truly set me apart," she reflects. "I’ve carried it with me in every area of my life—from academics to relationships to my career. This place taught me to show respect, and that respect has made all the difference."

A Community Built on Support and Mentorship

For both Kennady and Mike, Combat Ministries has been about more than just martial arts. It has always been a family. They have given and received support through life’s ups and downs. Kennady loves the deep relationships she has forged with other members. She made special mention of Gene and Tabitha Fletcher. They have been a priceless model of love and commitment for Kennady, especially in the face of personal hardship. She spoke of Gene and “Tab” as though she would her closest family members.

Mike agrees, noting that Combat Ministries has become "a chosen family." "We’ve been through dark times together and celebrated victories side by side. This place isn’t just about teaching martial arts; it’s about creating stronger humans, better families, and a better community," he shares. Through mentorship and support, Combat Ministries has served as a place of healing and growth for many. The emotional and psychological benefits of being part of this community cannot be overstated.

The sense of belonging is one of the most powerful aspects of the ministry. Kennady recalls the early days when her entire family would train together, creating lasting memories. "Even though my parents split up, I remember the good times when we trained as a family," she says. "Watching my parents spar—seeing them physically struggle—was one of the best memories of my childhood. It helped me understand that they weren’t invincible, and that made me respect them even more."

Impacting the Larger Community

While the martial arts training is a central component of Combat Ministries, its mission goes far beyond that. Mike underscores the importance of the ministry’s work in improving the broader community, saying, "We don’t just make fighters; we make better humans." Both he and Kennady emphasize that the true strength of Combat Ministries lies in its ability to create positive social change—teaching respect, resilience, and community service to everyone it touches.

As central Indiana faces increasing challenges such as substance abuse, homelessness, and social instability, Combat Ministries has remained committed to making a difference. Mike sees a future where the ministry not only expands its athletic and artistic programs, but becomes more deeply involved in serving broader issues like these. "Madison County is going through a lot," he says. "We need to engage on an even more socially relevant stage—helping people with real-world issues."

This is a vision of transformation on a larger scale. Combat Ministries is creating a community that fights together, grows together, and supports each other no matter what life throws their way. We love to bring together people from all walks of life. Families, kids, teens, adults, everybody has challenges in life. Working together is what makes us stronger.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Combat Ministries

As Combat Ministries celebrates 15 years of service, we look forward to growing this ministry to bring a positive influence to even more communities. Kennady sees the potential for Combat Ministries to "explode," reaching more people, including older generations, and providing a safe place for anyone in need. "I want to see the ministry grow, to see the love we share spread to more families and individuals," she says.

For Mike, his commitment to Combat Ministries is unwavering. "You can’t get rid of me," he says with a smile, noting that no matter what the future holds, he will always be involved in making the world a better place. "We started in a church basement with floor burns, and I didn’t see this coming," he reflects. "But now, I know that we’re just getting started."

The story of Combat Ministries is one of perseverance, community, and growth. Over the last 15 years, this organization has not only shaped the lives of its members, but has also become a pillar in the local community. We partner with local business to share our message and encourage customers toward theirs as well. We welcome all. We work hard, train hard, laugh hard, and love hard. This community has been here for us for 15 years, and we will continue to be here for the Anderson community and beyond.
